So after waiting over a month after my MRI showing SLAP tear and small rotator cuff tear, I finally get in the hospital for surgery. When they did the nerve block, I ended up having a tonic-clonic seizure because they accidentally got the local anesthetic into my blood stream. They were able to reverse the effects of the toxicity using a lipid infusion. Apparently I had to be tubed and now I'm having complications from that as well. Horribly sore throat, cut in my mouth, severe chest congestion that may be infection (going to doc tomorrow). I had to be admitted to the hospital and undergo several neurological tests before they would let me leave. All of that and I didn't even get my shoulder fixed! The anesthesialogist told me that there would be no danger in doing the nerve block when I come back in (at the end of this month) and there was no way I wanted to do this shoulder surgery without it. I'm supposed to get the regional and general anesthesia for this surgery. I'm really nervous about the post-op pain, but I think I'm more scared to try the nerve block again. From what I'm reading, I could have died if they didn't know to use the lipid infusion so quickly after realizing what had happened. So I guess my question is, has anyone hear had shoulder surgery without the nerve block, and exactly how bad is the post-op pain. I know it's hard to describe in words. My shoulder pain now can fluctuate up to a 7-8 where I have involuntary tears come down my face, but I manage without any pain medications.
